Orthopedics is heavily reliant on implants and generates high levels of waste, therefore, sustainability is a crucial issue that needs to be addressed. Despite the high volume of material use, this speciality can also greatly benefit from waste reduction, recycling, and increased energy efficiency. Disposable devices and joint implants generate significant amounts of waste and high carbon emissions in orthopaedics. The number of materials in instrument boxes and the transport of other surgical materials also greatly increase the environmental burden. With involvement in a complex supply chain, the shift from carbon emissions to green orthopedics, coupled with the development of ethical standards, is an area that warrants research and collaboration, and offers significant benefits.
